Homemade Sticky Buns vs. Cinnamon Buns: What’s the Difference?
While both pecan sticky buns and cinnamon rolls are beloved for their sweet, doughy goodness, they each have their unique charms. Here’s a quick breakdown:
- Filling: Cinnamon rolls are all about the cinnamon sugar, swirled generously throughout soft dough. Pecan sticky buns take it up a notch with a richer filling that includes pecans, adding a delightful crunch and depth of flavor.
- Topping: After baking, cinnamon rolls are often drizzled with a simple icing or cream cheese frosting. Pecan sticky buns, however, bake with their topping—typically a caramel-like mixture with pecans—that infuses into the bun for a gooey, sticky finish.
- Texture and Presentation: Cinnamon rolls are fluffy and perfect for pulling apart, while pecan sticky buns are denser, thanks to the gooey caramel and nuts. When served, pecan sticky buns are inverted to show off their glossy, nut-studded topping, giving them a more decadent look and feel.
This recipe covers the pecan sticky bun, perfect if you’re seeking something a bit richer and more textured than a classic cinnamon roll. Whether for a fancy breakfast or a sweet afternoon snack, this single serving treat is just the right size for enjoying without leftovers.

Step-By-Step to Make This Homemade Sticky Bun
Let’s walk through the process visually to create your delicious single serving pecan sticky roll. Follow these straightforward steps, and you’ll have a warm, inviting treat in no time!
Step 1: Combine Dry Ingredients
In a medium bowl, mix together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, brown sugar, and a pinch of salt. Stir these until well combined to ensure an even distribution throughout your dough.
Step 2: Incorporate Wet Ingredients
To the dry mixture, drizzle in the melted coconut oil. Stir until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add the coconut milk and mix until a dough forms.
Step 3: Knead the Dough
Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead it 5-7 times until smooth. Cover the dough and let it rest for 15 minutes to relax the gluten, which will make the dough easier to roll out.
Step 4: Prepare the Filling
In a saucepan, combine the brown sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Stir these together to mix well. Over medium-low heat, add the coconut milk to the pan, stirring constantly until smooth.
Add the coconut oil and continue stirring until the mixture reaches a boil and thickens to a sticky consistency. Stir in the finely chopped pecans and cook for an additional 30 seconds. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
Step 5: Preheat the Oven
Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure it’s ready for baking once your roll is assembled.
Step 6: Roll Out the Dough
On a lightly floured surface, roll the rested dough into a rectangle about 4 inches by 10 inches. This shape will help in rolling the dough evenly.
Step 7: Apply the Filling
Spread the slightly cooled filling evenly across the rolled-out dough, leaving a small border around the edges to prevent the filling from leaking out.
Step 8: Shape the Roll
Start at one of the long edges and tightly roll up the dough into a log. Cut the log in half lengthwise, then twist the two strands together, keeping the cut sides facing up. Coil the twisted dough into a round shape, tucking in the ends to secure.
Step 9: Bake
Place the shaped dough in a greased or parchment-lined baking tin. Bake for about 20 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the dough feels set when lightly touched.
Step 10: Cooling
Let the sticky roll cool in the tin for at least 10 minutes. This resting period helps it set and makes it easier to remove from the tin without breaking.
Step 11: Enjoy
Following these steps, you’ll make a perfect pecan sticky roll that’s ideal for enjoying a moment of delicious solitude.
